Garden Homes Neighborhood Association, Inc.

The Garden Homes Neighborhood Association, Inc. (GHNAI) was formed in 1971 in response to an episode what was known as "white flight", with hit the neighborhood starting n 1971. Four "new comers" wanted to do something to bring the community together and to address whatever would be the needs of a neighborhood with new families. Will Hudson was named the first president and the first major project was to add playground equipment to Garden Homes Park, the centerpiece of the neighborhood.
Over the years, GHNAI expanded its sphere of interest northward to W. Hampton
Avenue, southward to W. Roosevelt Drive, east to N. Teutonia and west to N. 27th Street. In 2000, the association conducted its meetings at the Atkinson Library. In 2012 it incorporated and in 2013 it earned non-profit, 501 {c){3) status, as well as designation as a Milwaukee Local Historic District. The all-volunteer association continues to support the community through improvement projects as well as through response to issues affecting the community of 358 households.
A History of Accomplishment
1971 - Initial formation.
